“Asher, dear, what’s wrong with you?”

Asher quickly wiped away his tears at the sound of his mother’s voice. He didn’t want her to see him like this. He quickly stood up from where he sat against the house and turned to face her. His red and tear-streaked face must look a mess.

“Son, what’s got you in such a state?” His mother took his hands and the warmth from her palms was like a balm to ease his troubles.

“Because of me, we’ve been banished from the village.” Asher gasped for breath, doing his best to breathe through his uncontrollable sobbing. “We have to leave our home and it’s all my fault.”

“Dear boy, settle down.” His mother took him by the hand and led him to the steps of their front porch. She pulled him down to sit next to her. “Tell me what has happened.”

Asher looked up into green eyes so much like his own. The love and faith in those eyes had him unloading everything that had happened that day. Just hours ago, Benedict’s father had caught them in the barn in a very compromising position, one they couldn’t explain away, and for that, Benedict’s father had forsaken Asher and his family, telling them they had until sundown to get their belongings and leave.

“See, Mama, it’s my fault. Because of me, we have to leave our home.” Asher broke down again, and his mother pulled his head into her lap and combed her fingers through his hair. He breathed in her sweet scent, fresh bread and honey.

“Well, it is quite the predicament, but we will survive, my sweet boy.” His mother kissed the top of his head. “This is only a bump in the road, Asher.”

“But aren’t you ashamed of me? Embarrassed by my unnatural actions?” Not that he wanted his mother to be upset with him, but she was taking this way too calmly.

“Why?” His mother seemed surprised by that question. “You love Benedict, and in my and your father’s eyes, that is all that matters.”

“Father knows of this?”

“We both do.” His mother chuckled. “Your father spotted you and Benedict down by the river a few months ago. We always teased about how close you boys had become. We just didn’t realize how close until that day.”

“You are not angry with me?”

“No.”

“But Mama, we have to leave our village, all our friends.” He couldn’t believe his mother was being so calm.

“So?” she snapped. “You are my son and I will not turn my back on you in your hour of need.” She smiled kindly at him and cupped her hand on his cheek. “Now tell me, Asher. Will you be all right?”

Asher closed his eyes and all he could see was Benedict turning his back on him and walking away. His chin started to tremble and tears seeped out of his eyes. “No, Mama, I don’t think I will.” He sobbed. “He walked away from me without saying a word.”

“Asher, sometimes it’s easier to walk away when faced with a great challenge.
